Tips on living with OSA

The mundane details

  1. Always carry your CPAP machine as carry-on luggage; otherwise it will likely be damaged. Battery operation is possible with some units. If you change your sleeping habits while vacationing, be aware that it may disturb your normal sleep patterns. Sleeping in unusual places, strange beds, odd noises during the night, jet lag, and variations in daily activities can cause less restful sleep than usual. These changes can disturb anyone's sleep, but the effects on the sleep apnea sufferer are often more pronounced.

  2. If you feel tired, consider paying more attention to your sleep hygiene, maintain regular hours, avoid alcohol or stimulants, be careful in choosing cold remedies with antihistamines, and take more frequent rest stops while driving.
